🌱 Step 1: Inspect and Mark Problem Areas

  • Walk the yard after watering or rain to spot low spots, dips, or puddles.
  • Use stakes, flagging tape, or spray paint to mark each uneven area.
  • For larger yards or serious grading needs, a laser level or string line gives precise results.

Pro tip: Check for underground issues like roots or pipes before digging.

🛠 Step 2: Choose Your Leveling Method

Topdressing with Soil (Best for minor dips under ¾ inch)

  • Use topsoil or quality garden mix—never use sand alone.
  • Spread ¼–½ inch of soil over low areas.
  • Seed or sod immediately, and water well.
  • After a few weeks, mow once grass roots and surface settles.

Full Grading (Needed for deeper depressions or re-slope)

  1. Loosen soil in low areas with a shovel or garden fork.
  2. Add fill material—a clay-sand mix for compaction or screened topsoil for turf areas.
  3. Shift excess soil from high spots into low zones.
  4. Level with a landscape rake or board, blending to ⅛ inch tolerance.
  5. Compact using a roller or plate compactor.
  6. Re-seed or sod the leveled ground and water consistently.

📆 Step 3: Seed, Sod, and Water Smartly

  • Choose appropriate grass type for your zone (e.g. fescue, bermuda, or blazing star natives).
  • For seed, spread evenly, lightly rake, and keep moist until germination.
  • For sod, place tight seams, then roll and water daily for two weeks.
  • After initial growth, transition to regular maintenance.
