How Low Should You Mow

What Mowing Height Should a Lawn Mower Be Set At?

Finding the perfect mowing height isn't guesswork—it’s about knowing your grass and adjusting for the season. At M&D Enterprises, we believe a properly cut lawn is the first step to a lush, healthy yard that thrives here in Oklahoma.

1. Know Your Grass Type & Location

  • Cool-Season Grasses (Bluegrass, Rye, Fescue – common north of St. Louis):
  • Spring & Fall: 2″–2½″ for optimal growth
  • Summer: Raise to ~3″ to reduce heat stress

  • Warm-Season Grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, Bahiagrass – typical in Oklahoma):
  • Spring/Fall: 1″–2″—they tolerate shorter heights well
  • Summer: Consistent 1″–2″ works for vigorous growth

2. Measure & Adjust Correctly

  • Deck height numbers may not match actual cut—test by mowing a small patch and measuring it.
  • Follow the 1/3 Rule: Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade per mowing.
  • Aim for trimming no more than 1″ at a time during peak growth. Multiple sessions per week may be ideal during spring and fall.

3. Caring for New Grass Seed or Sod

  • Sod: Wait at least 10 days or until vigorous growth before mowing.
  • Seed, Plugs, or Sprigs: Let grass reach 3"-4" tall before the first cut.

4. The Case for Tall Grass

  • Taller grass provides shade, retains soil moisture, and builds deep roots.
  • It grows slower, leading to fewer mows—saving you up to 20% of mowing time annually.
  • It also reduces weed intrusion—less need for herbicides!

5. Why Cutting Too Short Harms Your Lawn

💡 Final Takeaway

  • Identify your grass and know your zone (warm vs. cool season).
  • Aim for 1″–2½″ based on grass type and season.
  • Avoid cutting more than 1/3 of grass at a time.
  • Leave new lawns longer until established.
  • Choose height that supports depth, strength, and overall lawn health.
